MARK O. HATFIELD Resident Fellowships, 2013-14

The Hatfield Resident Fellows program targets newly minted Master and Ph.D. graduates who will have
earned their degrees by June 2013 and who possess both a strong record of scholarship and demonstrable
interest in public service and leadership. The 8-month paid residency is an academically rigorous, projectoriented,
educational and working experience designed to provide each Fellow with an opportunity to enhance
their leadership skills, expand their network, and add to their resume with a public service agency in Oregon.

About the program

The time for public service renewal is now upon us. The leadership and
professional ranks of governmental and nonprofit organizations are being
thinned by accelerating retirements and declining budgets. At the same, the
local, state, regional, and national challenges that confront the public sector
have seldom seemed so daunting.
The future vitality and success of our public institutions will depend on
attracting and developing exceptional, innovative, ethical, and ready leaders.
That is why Portland State University’s Center for Public Service launched the
Hatfield Resident Fellowship in 2012 and its brethren program, the Oregon
Summer Fellowship, over 10 years ago.
